The Miami Open and Laykold celebrate 40 Years of court consistency

40 years of sizzling tennis. 4 iconic venues. 1 championship surface.

As the Official Court Surface of the Miami Open for 40 years, Laykold has been the stalwart supporting some of the sport’s most iconic moments. Across four venue changes and decades of innovation, Laykold has ensured that the Miami Open’s courts deliver Grand Slam-level consistency for the sport’s champions, year after year, match after match.

A world-class double act

Laykold’s tenure as the official surface of the Miami Open is the longest-standing court partnership in professional tennis, with the tournament relying on Laykold’s expertise to create a consistent playing field, regardless of changing venues and tournament requirements.

From its inaugural event in Delray Beach in 1985, where unseeded American Tim Mayotte beat Scott Davis in five sets to claim the inaugural men’s title and Martina Navratilova won her only singles title of the tournament, the Miami Open has undergone significant transformations. Each move, from Delray Beach to Boca West in Boca Raton, to Crandon Park, and finally to Hard Rock Stadium, has presented unique challenges, with Laykold demonstrating why it is such a trusted partner and evolving its surfaces to meet the tournament’s needs.

Tailored consistency from Delray Beach to the Hard Rock Stadium

The Miami Open’s inaugural edition took place in Delray Beach in 1985, before moving to Boca West the following year, then finding a long-term home at Crandon Park in 1987. For over 30 years, Crandon Park was synonymous with the tournament, with its signature green and purple courts set against the breathtaking backdrop of quintessential Key Biscayne palm trees and bright blue waters.

The tournament’s move to Hard Rock Stadium in 2019 marked a new chapter. No longer a permanent tennis venue, the Miami Open’s home became the sport’s largest ‘pop-up’ event, requiring Laykold to install 27 world-class courts (10 competition courts and 17 practice courts) in a venue that also hosts football (as the home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins) and Formula 1 – and all in a matter of weeks.

Vivid Miami colors, unrivalled pace precision

The shift also introduced a vibrant new court color scheme (Oasis Blue and Biscayne Blue) and pace rating requirements, which evolved again in 2023. Laykold’s R&D and installation teams worked closely with tournament officials to fine-tune the surface, ensuring consistency with past iterations and player satisfaction, while meeting the event’s key specifications and elevating the fan experience.

“The annual transformation from a football stadium to a major tennis venue is intense,” says Trimmer Dettor, President of FastDry Courts “Laykold tech innovation which allows court coating to be laid on asphalt, for an event court, within a reduced timeframe gave us a customized product to work with. This, alongside our tailored installation method which we’ve optimized over the years, allows us to deliver with speed and unmatched consistency.”

Courts that are 10 x more consistent

Laykold’s ability to maintain court consistency across venues, climates, and evolving event and player requirements sets it apart. With a precision-engineered surface that is 10 times more consistent than industry standards, Laykold ensures that Miami Open players experience the same pace, whether it’s the final or a practice session.

This dedication to uniformity extends beyond Miami. As the official surface of both the Miami Open and Indian Wells, Laykold has brought a new level of court consistency to the Sunshine Swing, ensuring seamless transitions for players between the two premier hard-court events.

Consistency and innovation underpin tennis’ longest court partnership

No milestone could be more fitting than celebrating Laykold’s 40th year at the Miami Open with another thrilling conclusion to the Sunshine Swing. From its earliest days in Delray Beach to its current home in Hard Rock Stadium, the Miami Open has evolved into one of tennis’ biggest crowd-pleasers, and a handy indicator of the players to watch in the lead-up to the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open.

For facility owners, event organizers, tournament directors and installers worldwide, Laykold’s track record at the Miami Open stands as a testament to its quality, drive to innovate, and proven reliability. Whether creating courts that showcase the sport’s greatest players or for local clubs, Laykold delivers unrivalled consistency that allows the players to focus on their game. It’s why Laykold has been trusted and chosen for over 40 years by the Miami Open.

The 2025 Miami Open is on at Hard Rock Stadium until 30 March.
